The benefits of having a running coach

Updated: Jan 31, 2022

Expectations versus reality without a running coach.

When training, racing and or completing so much goes into the coaching structure. If you do not implement a periodised training plan allowing for the development of a larger aerobic base, speed and strength, flexibility etc, you will not get faster, or stronger. As a runner, you will eventually get to a point where you will stagnate. You will, however, feel the benefits if you allow for a slow and consistent progressive overload and a variant of training stimuli. The process is stimuli and progressive overload with adequate recovery and sufficient time for adaptation. This will result in small changes, leading to big achievable goals.

When doing a periodised running plan a full-body workout is typically incorporated for each individual’s body to make you stronger, more balanced, mobile and pain-free. This teaches the body corrective movement patterns to allow for greater functional running movement, allowing for retraining and re-educating of the muscles. Ultimately, this makes an athlete a more efficient runner.

Here are some benefits to having a running coach:

  1. Teachers running load (mileage, overtraining, adaptation, aerobic, recovery, endurance etc)

  2. Gives motivation, support and provides accountability

  3. Improves performance

  4. Guides mental and physical execution

  5. Teaches body awareness

  6. Helps plan/set realistic weekly and long-term goals

Running places huge stress on joints and ligaments and so flexibility and strength through

the feet, knees, hips and torso are crucial. Alignment and endurance of lower limbs are first to fatigue in a runner’s body. For this reason, it is important to keep the strength of the lower limbs but also good postural muscles of the upper body to keep you upright and moving forward. Core strength places a massive role as the torso rotates in space. A good coach considers all of the above while addressing the whole person and their goals.
